Chapter 10

Nathaniel spent the entire time in Hyde Park wrestling with the shock and anger that came along with hearing of his father’s letter. He’d already been half asleep in Hannah’s reticule, but he’d woken fully due to the violent jostling as the girls ran to Henry with the letter. His head felt wobbly after that unpleasant ride, and Henry’s words only made the sensation worse, stunning him completely. Nathaniel hadn’t expected kindness or generosity from Lord Bembry; he’d long since given up on hoping for basic decency from the man. His father’s unwillingness to bail him out of a potential scrape was no surprise.

But to be cut from the will! He’d predicted that missing this year’s visit—or even postponing it—would result in his allowance being withheld. Such measures had worked to ensure his compliance last time. And the fear of it had been enough to amplify his anxiety as each week passed with no further hope of reversing the curse.

Now his father—the blasted cad—had increased the stakes to a ruthless degree. A few lean months, Nathaniel could have managed. No hope of an income or title or land? That was a bigger problem.

A much bigger problem, as Nathaniel was increasingly determined to marry Hannah once he regained his true form. He might have to work to make her see him as more than Henry’s friend, but the past weeks had convinced him that he needed her in his life daily.

If his father cut him out… he could take on a profession. He could find employment and earn a modest income. But that wasn’t the life he wanted to give Hannah. And worse, if she were to mistakenly believe that he was offering for her hand merely because he needed her money…

His only hope was to pray that Kate found a spell before it was too late.
